Map Conversion
In order to use your own scanned/digital maps in map2hand, you will need to convert them to the appropriate format. The MapMaker.jar
desktop application is provided to allow you to do this.
Double-click on MapMaker.jar to run the application.
Note: if the MapMaker.jar application does not run, it is possible that you will need to install a Java Runtime Environment (JRE) on your desktop. This can be obtained from here.
Converting a map using map2hand MapMaker
Obtain a digital image of the map you wish to convert into map2hand
format. The maximum permitted size of the image is 2400x2400 pixels. You should perform any necessary image manipulation at this stage (e.g. rotating the map to correct the alignment of a scan).
map2hand can only be as accurate as the supplied map. In addition, the area covered by the map should not be too large. map2hand
is not designed to work over large areas (e.g. entire continents). As a rough guideline, about 6 degrees of longitude should be the upper limit for good accuracy across the entire map.
Run the MapMaker.jar desktop application

Select the ”...” button next to the “Map File” label and browse to the map image file that was just created.
Fill in the description in the next text box.
Tick the “high-res” checkbox if your Palm device has a high resolution (min 320x320) display.
Hit ”Convert”
The image will be converted into a file with the same name as the original image file, but with the extension “prc”.
Load this prc file onto your handheld to use in map2hand.
When you restart map2hand on your Palm device, you will need to re-select the “Maps...” button on the main screen in order that the new map is loaded into the application.
